UPDATE: Spring 2005
EMRO has located a building and land for the Egyptian Mau sanctuary. It is an old carpet factory on the main, touristic road to Sakkara, half way between the Giza and Sakkara pyramids. It is in a good location and big enough to make into a reasonable-sized sanctuary. It is about 13,000SF or almost a third of an acre, with an enclosed yard full of fruit and palm trees.
The building presently has two floors of about 250SM (2500 SF each floor) and is plumbed for water and electricity. It has the potential to be built up another level or two which would allow for touristic shops with revenue-making potential to support the non-profit sanctuary on the main level. A veterinary clinic space is also planned, as well as a cafe for the locals and tourists. |

The EMRO sanctuary is close to other local animal shelters, and to tourist attractions which should draw the public, and raise awareness and education of the Egyptian Mau history and plight. The building to the side is a poultry farm and should be able to provide poultry products at a good price to the sanctuary.
We estimate it would take about $50,000 US to renovate the building for suitable use, as it has not been rented or used for over a decade, so it is not presently usable. EMRO is requesting funds from the public and corporate sponsors for its renovation and maintenance.
Please give generously to the sanctuary fund to help us facilitate the Maus.
