December 6, 2009 - Hot off the press from Rosalind, our PR Manager, an article on EMRO, written in July 2009 by John Prosser, is finally in print and is available in the December 2009 issue of "Egypt Today" Magazine! Click here to read the article in PDF version; available now in newstands!

NATIVE MAU BREEDERIES!

November 18, 2009, further to our news story of June, 2009, EMRO is pleased to introduce two additional native Egyptian Mau/Arabian Mau breederies, with another in the works. This brings it to a total of five such breederies in the world. Part of EMRO's mandate is to support registered and qualified Egyptian Mau breederies by helping to provide only the best, healthy, well-spotted Maus as potential foundation cats for their breeding program in an effort to keep the Mau breed alive. EMRO is proud to have provided native Egyptian Mau stock to registered Egyptian Mau breederies in Canada, USA and Europe with local Maus (Egyptian, Arabian) sent to help strengthen the gene pool of existing Mau lines.

We are excited to co-participate with new breederies who wish to focus on Native Egyptian Maus, Arabian Maus and Shirazi Maus. These breederies are part of a new, as yet unofficial, association called NESMA: The Native Egyptian and Shirazi Mau Association. See this section on our website for updates.

The newest breederies are High Priest Native Egyptian Maus (currently on hiatus), secondary link here: www.egyptianmau.cat.com, (Maple Ridge, BC, Canada) and Nefertari Meri-en-Mut (Dudingen, Switzerland).

High Priest Mau Cattery is run by Marilyn Priest, a passionate animal enthusiast. She has previously raised pedigreed Egyptian Maus before (in the 80s) and has now switched to raising the Native Egyptian Maus.

Gloria Lauris and Ismail Elkholy, Co-Founders of EMRO, were very pleased to meet Marilyn and her sister, Teresa, in Surrey, BC, Canada in July 2009 at Teresa's home and breedery (for over 20 years) for Abyssinians and Savanna cats. Visit Teresa's home page for her Savannahs in Canada and her Ruddicat Abyssinians catteries home page. Both sisters are passionate about animals and cats in general. Marilyn was raised with champion dog, chavy and rabbit breeders, and she, herself, went on to Egyptian Mau, canary and horse breeding. Marilyn practices "clicker" training for horses and even assists in training stunt horses for movies and commercials (see:  http://www.clickerchicks.webs.com/). She wants to focus on the Native Egyptian Maus, imported directly from Egypt, and the Arabian Maus from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She is enthralled with these ancient cats and hopes to help save these revered but vanishing ancient breeds. She is registered with TICA.

We wish Marilyn and High Priest cattery the best of luck as she begins to set up her cattery. She recently had some imports from Cairo this fall, and second generation Native Maus from the only American Native Mau breedery in Texas this summer. EMRO hopes to visit her cattery in Maple Ridge in summer 2010 for an update and possibly see some kittens in 2010!

Also, new this fall is the Swiss Native Egyptian and Shirazi Mau breedery, Nefertari Meri-en-Mut in Dudingen, Switzerland (near Bern). This fresh, new cattery is just starting up and currently has no breed stock but is actively involved in acquiring same. The breedery owners, Tamara and Stephan Fretz, plan periodic trips to Cairo, Egypt to hand-pick their stock and prepare it for Europe early in the new year, as well as with some stock coming from the established Native Egyptian Mau breedery, Ancient Dreams, in Germany. Tamara is an animal psychologist, and Stephan is a dentist, but they both share a passion for animals. They are currently dog trainers http://www.bht-hundertraining.ch, are raising Longhaired Whippets http://www.the-wind-pirates.ch/701.html, have a two-year-old son, four housecats, and two Maine Coon cats. They also have fish and reptiles, so they have quite the menagerie!

More information forthcoming as they get set up and more photos as well. EMRO is hoping to visit within a year, possibly during the Summer of 2010.

Next, the latest upcoming Native Mau breedery to begin in the new year will be Pawfect Bengals and Maus, in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto), operated by Graham and Sandra Baker. More as we have news, hopefully by Spring of 2010!

This adds to the original number of Native Mau breederies - Ancient Dreams (Germany: and who has some champion Maus already, affiliated with Felidae e.V., see also pictures under "Latest News for Jan. 09"), and Cairo Cats (Texas, USA; currently representing America and represented by TICA, see also pictures under "Latest News for May 09"). For more information, or access to their cats for adoption, please contact them via their websites Ancient Dreams (site currently available only in German) and Cairo Cats.

October 27, 2009 - Diab, a Mau that EMRO sent to South Africa a couple of years ago, is now recognized as the first registered Egyptian Mau in South Africa by the World Cat Federation.  Below is Diab’s certificate of recognition. Click to view larger image.

July 15, 2009 - Because the Egyptian Mau was genetically proven to be unique from other breeds and represented a different origin, the Mediterranean versus Western Europe of Southeast Asia, the Egyptian Mau was one of six breeds that had expanded sequencing for the Feline Genome Sequencing Project that was supported by the National Institutes of Health. Kitten Season Has Hit EMRO!
Please check out the EMRO Cats page to see the lovely kittens looking for a new home. And yes, there will be more kittens soon. Mau mom Lolly gave birth to twins and was able also able to nurse orphaned black Mau kittens that were found in a plastic trash bag and would probably not have survived without Lolly's care & milk.

June 24, 2009 - You can view the first pictures of Lolly's litter & her adopted kittens on the EMRO Cats page now.

Native Mau Breederies
June 17, 2009 - EMRO is pleased to introduce two fully native Egyptian Mau/Arabian Mau breederies. As far as we know, these are the only two truly dedicated registered native Mau breederies in the world. Part of EMRO's mandate is to support registered and qualified Egyptian Mau breederies by helping to provide only the best, healthy, well-spotted Maus as potential foundation cats for their breeding program in an effort to keep the Mau breed alive. EMRO is proud to have provided native Egyptian Mau stock to registered Egyptian Mau breederies in Canada, USA and Europe with local Maus (Egyptian, Arabian) to help strengthen the gene pool of existing Mau lines.

Of special note are the new breederies Ancient Dreams (Germany: currently representing Europe and has some champion Maus already, affiliated with Felidae e.V., see also pictures under Latest News for Jan. 09) and Cairo Cats (Texas, USA; currently representing North America, soon to be represented by TICA, see also pictures under Latest News for May 09). For more information or access to these cats for adoption, please contact them via their websites Ancient Dreams (site currently only in German) and Cairo Cats.

May 27, 2009 - URGENT! APO box is needed in Cairo! EMRO often needs things shipped from overseas to Egypt, but due to complications with customs, it is simplest if we can gain access to someone's APO box, affiliated with the American Embassy. If you have such a connection and are willing to help us bring in much needed supplies (e.g. kitten milk, pet cages, scratch posts etc.) through providing an address which such items can be sent to, please contact us at info@emaurescue.org.

URGENT: EMRO is looking for flight escorts to accompany adopted cats on their way to their future homes in Canada, Europe, the US and South Korea. Please check out the Escort a Mau page to learn more.

EMRO-Founder Meets Webmaster Bettina and Sees Cairo Cats Cattery in Texas!
May 10, 2009 - Gloria Lauris, co-founder of EMRO, was delighted to meet with Bettina von Stockfleth, EMRO's webmaster! Bettina was vacationing in Texas, pet-sitting for friends near Midland, and a mutual gathering was arranged to meet, discuss EMRO issues and relax a bit. Gloria wishes to thank her for all her hard volunteer work and hours on the website.

Gloria and teen son Ali stayed for the weekend with Carol Anne Green, owner of Cairo Cats Cattery, just outside Midland, Texas, enjoying Texan hospitality. Cairo Cats is one of the two native Egyptian Mau catteries in the world and currently represents North America. Carol Anne has imports from Cairo, Egypt and Saudi Arabia plus a fledgling cattery of first generation cats of native Egyptian Mau descent. She also fosters over a dozen other homeless cats in her acreage. For more information on Cairo Cats, see her website.

EMRO Founders Visit German Native Egyptian Mau Breedery
Jan. 2009 & Aug. 2008 - On two occasions, EMRO-founders were pleased to be hosted by Werner Wildner and Elke Seefelder of native Egyptian Mau breedery Ancient Dreams just outside Munich, Germany. Gloria Lauris pet-escorted a few Maus from EMRO to them, and she and family were given warm German hospitality in return. EMRO inspected the cattery set up, discussed feeding and design layout, cat personalities, and took part in several family outings, including trips to nearby ancient churches, caves and historic sites like the Neuswanstein castle (although sadly didn't get in due to timing). Gloria's teen son Ali especially enjoyed the German ice cream and mini golf, as well as a few rousing board games with the family's daughters Adina, Naemi and Samy. Ancient Dreams is currently the only native Egyptian Mau (and Arabian Mau) breedery in Europe and Asia, and currently already has several German champion Maus. For more information on the cattery, visit their website (content currently only available in German).
